Description

SU 10003 represents a small concentration of stone rubble located in the center of trench 10000. Because of the window we dug at the western end of SU 10001, we knew that we should expect a transition from the greyish-brown soil to a yellow-ish brown soil. Though a significant transition between SU 10002 and SU 10003 at the eastern end of SU 10002 was not particularly apparent, we left an artificial scarp so as to dig SU 10003 separately. As we excavated SU 10003, it became clear that it had the same soil matrix as SU 10002, with a slightly higher concentration of rubble. SU 10003 had tiny plaster and charcoal inclusions, some bone, and pottery. SU 10003 appears to be part of the natural long term accumulation taking place after abandonment, similar to SU 10002, but with the addition of stones in the soil. SU 10003 may have also contributed to the distinction between the eastern sandy half of the trench and the western silty half, as SU 10003 occurs approximately at the divide.
