Description

SU 10041 represents a loose leveling fill underlying SU 10034 outside of the western walled structure (SUs 10043, 10044, 10045, 10046, and 10047). SU 10041 had a packed surface, which seems to be associated with the raising of the surface when wall SUs 10046 and 10047 were constructed. The top of the foundation course for wall SUs 10046 and 10047 was visible at the start of excavating SU 10041, and when we closed the SU we were below the lowest stones of the foundation course. The layer underneath SU 10041, SU 10051, appears to have been the surface on which they were standing when they laid this lowest course, and then SU 10041 represents the fill that was placed against the new construction. Although the surface of SU 10041 was compact, this quickly gave way to the typical loose fill, with ceramics, bone, and shell throughout. Moderate amounts of small rocks were also present, though no larger stones.
