Description
SU 9006 represents an ancient fill layer that was preserved below Pesce's surface (SU 9005 in Area B). SU 9006 has a dark brown, densely compacted, clay-like soil located in the N corner of Area B. This N corner of Area B has revealed more cultural material, like pottery sherds. The S corner of SU 9006 is an orange, clay like material similar to SU 9005 in Area A. There is a large concentration of rocks located in the SE corner of SU 9006 and fewer rocks but a fair amount of charcoal bits in the SE corner of SU 9006. SU 9006 survives at a higher elevation than Pesce's surface (SU 9005 in Area A) thanks to the perpendicular block (WS_89) that separates Area A from Area B. Previous excavators appear to have only excavated to the bottom of the lowest architectural features in Area B, specifically those that needed modern concrete supports. Drain 2 defines the eastern end of Area B and has much modern repair, which likely caused Pesce's excavation to stop at the base of Drain 2 rather than continue down to the elevation of surface SU 9005 in Area A. As of June 12, 2023, we have excavated SU 9006 down to the level of the lip of modern concrete material located along Drain 2 and abutting WS 64 in Area B.
