Description
SU 9005 represents a compacted earth surface that covers almost the entirety of Area A and Area B, with only the westernmost few centimeters of Area A not included. Surface SU 9005 was a densely compacted grey/brown soil with frequent flecks of white throughout. SU 9005 was almost entirely sterile and only a few centimeters in depth, as seen by the excavation of a small window trench in the central southern portion of Area A. Our interpretation is that the surface was formed by the importation of some natural materials to cover over bedrock exposed by Pesce’s excavations. This layer was then compacted/walked over during the pouring of modern cement restorations, which included a lip of modern concrete material located along Drain 2 and abutting WS 64 in Area B.
