Description

SU 9040 represents an arbitrary distinction within unexcavated portion of fill 9021 created to remove near-complete amphora on its side within the wider fill. SU 9040 was created to collect the nearly complete amphora seen deposited in 9021 and the dense cultural materials in the surrounding soils. 9040 was excavated as a window trench in the southwest corner of Area D. The boundaries of the window were determined by the dimensions of the amphorae included within it and what was needed to safely remove the materials given the complete excavation to bedrock in the northern half of Area D. Within the fill we encountered a highly friable pot that seemed to have collapsed, located directly under a large handle fragment of an amphora. The ceramic seemed almost waterlogged. One layer of the material lay directly over another, with a thin lens of flaky mud-like soil in between. This soil, as well as all the surrounding soil and large portions of charcoal were collected.
