Description

SU 10008 represents a semi-loose, mostly empty layer in the central portion of the trench, running from approximately the 10m mark to the eastern edge of the walled structure. We began SU 10008 and SU 10009 at the same time, differentiating them to see if there were any material differences between the up-slope area vs. the down slope area. Some material culture was found throughout, mainly larger pieces of ceramics along with eco facts. We did note an increase in material, particularly bone, closer to the walled structure. Underneath SU 10008, we came down on a smooth, hard packed layer that is now being excavated as SU 10011. In the course of exposing this layer, several large stones were uncovered in the middle of SU 10008, including a well-cut block that appears to have been part of a threshold (no longer in-situ). We also excavated and articulated the stones of the exterior face of the eastern wall of the walled structure, removing several smaller stones that appear to be displaced pieces of the original wall, which were obscuring the preserved courses of the wall. Ultimately, we were able to expose a much cleaner crest of the eastern wall after removing these small stones, making the wall more substantial and in line with what we would expect for such a wall.
