Description

SU 10061 represents a large basalt stone, under the another basalt stone 10060 with green clay between them (10027). We did not find the bottom of 10061, nor did we find its western face, in the area we excavated west of 10061. Because 10060 was embedded in natural red clay, it can probably be assumed that 10061 is as well.
Eric identified the flaking of the lower basalt stone into the soil of SU 10027 as fire setting, a process by which one lights fires on the rock that is being chipped away to remove moisture and make it easier to flake off pieces of the basalt. This seems to support the conclusion that the basalt stones are placed/constructed rather than naturally occurring. The green clay is also the signature of the older phases of construction in the area.
