Description

en SU 9046 represents the opus quadratum wall built atop bedrock foundation 9045 on the western edge of Area D. The wall is constructed of predominantly very large, finely cut square-cut blocks. Just north of the wall's center, there is a section of notably smaller square cut blocks that serve as a first course below a more typical large block as a second course. The construction of the wall seems original despite this unusual patch, especially as immediately south of these smaller stones there is a step down in foundation 9045 that is tightly filled by further large blocks. The wall continues further north than our excavation area, as Area D is defined by the later phase wall 9044 on its north end. The wall is also notably wider than its counterpart on the eastern side of Area D, 9042. There is currently an "opening" in the wall where one of the large blocks appears to be missing, with only two significantly shorter blocks resting atop the foundation. The far southern end of the wall passes over the bedrock shelf at the southern end of the room that serves as the foundation of wall 9047. This southernmost part of 9046 contains a single basalt block that is bonded to bedrock foundation 9045 with green clay and under the overlying courses of the wall, but also breaks the plane of the wall face extending to the east.
