SU 10053 represents a dense grey clay fill of cut SU 10054. The green clay (SU 10053) and the cut sandstone blocks (SU 10058) were deposited together in some sort of construction event, the intention and function of which is not yet apparent. SU 10053 is found packed between the cut sandstone blocks and forms a bedding beneath them. The majority of SU 10053 came from the space between the western block and the face of the cut, as did most of the cultural material. There were decent amounts of ceramics in SU 10053 along with some bone and shell, again, mostly coming from the 10-20cm of space in the western portion of the SU 10053. The bedding on which the sandstone blocks (SU 10058) sit extends north into the northern scarp of the trench, even though the blocks themselves do not. This seems like a further indication that a block was robbed out as a part of cut 100__ (SU not yet made). Underneath the bedding for the sandstone blocks (SU 10058), removal of the clay (SU 10053) reveals a course of rounded basalt stones, whose depth is not yet discernible. As with other instances where we have found green clay (i.e. SU 10027), it seems to be used as a bonding agent in earlier phases of construction. Earlier layers were cut by SU 10054, and the clay (SU 10053) and sandstone blocks (SU 10058) were deposited in a construction event, perhaps terracing the landscape.
