Description

en SU 10057 represents the natural bedrock layer directly east of the western walled structure. 10057 was overlain by 10051, a thick layer of dense red clay, which itself may be partially natural. 10057 has a different appearance than the adjacent bedrock SUs, 10056 and 10078, in that 10057 is predominantly made up of fractured basalt pieces embedded in red clay. We initially thought that 10057 may represent quarrying waste, but two explanations were offered for how this might occur naturally, by a geologist friend. One is that successive freeze-thaw events may fracture larger basalt pieces and allow space for the clay to enter in between the basalt pieces. Another possibility is that immense pressure from above fractured the basalt in such a way, again creating space for the red clay to come in between.
