SU 9048 represents a course of basalt stones bonded together and to bedrock (9022/9037) with green clay below large block 9049. The basalt foundation serves to provide a more level surface for the roughly finished bottom of single block 9049, which serves as the barrier between Areas A & B. Basalt foundation 9048 exists only along the southern potion of 9049, as bedrock as naturally higher at its northern end. The basalt foundation also lies partially within cut 9024, which shapes the bedrock along the southern end of 9049.
