Description
en
SU 10054 represents a cut in a compact reddish-brown soil fill (SU not yet assigned) found in the eastern portion of the trench, and is filled by the green clay (SU 10053) and sandstone blocks (SU 10058). Although originally seen on the western side of SUs 10053/10054, the reddish soil also appears to be cut into on the eastern side of SUs 10053/10054. SU 10054 is a straight, vertical cut with green clay packed into it. Because the red soil is at a higher level on the western side of SUs 10053/10054 than on the eastern side, the cut SU 10054 could have been intended as part of a terracing event, to remove the previous slope of the landscape and create to flat planes at different levels on either side of the cut and material filling it. For practical reasons, we were not able to fully excavate the fill of the cut SUs 10053/10054, so some care will be needed as we dig through the layers that were cut (e.g. SU 10066) to keep the remaining fill SU 10053 separate from earlier layers.
