Description

SU 9065 represents a dark brown fill beneath 9063 in Area D. 9065 exists mostly along the western edge of Area D, dropping off quickly as it travels both east across the trench and north along the western edge of the area. Within the fill of 9065 we uncovered a sawn fragment of red dear antler, which bore a smooth cut across the bottom of the piece. Angela identified the species and that the cut was likely related to working the antler into a tool from field photographs. We also found several large, surprisingly fresh seeming bone fragments possibly related to the antler. Alongside these ecofactual materials we also uncovered some sherds of very large ceramic vessels, most notably two fragments of a very large rimmed dish with floret markings on its exterior face. In order to assign a new SU after our initial discoveries within the fill we created a somewhat arbitrary new level as near as the top of the deposit as possible, though we lost maybe 20% of the material north of the defined edge of 9065 into 9063.
