Description

SU 9021 represents an arbitrary level called within SU 9004 to better control the stratigraphy. Since SU 9004 was paused in process and subsequently had some areas carved out, SU 9021 is mainly meant to make trench drawings more coherent. SU 9021 was a mottled matrix of brown, red, and yellow soils. There are a high degree of large potsherds throughout SU 9021, but particularly so in the southwest corner.
During excavation, we realized that the charcoal lens Paula first observed in the NW corner of SU 9021 was actually a substantial deposit. We kept the charcoal as part of the already mottled SU 9021, but took a 100% spot sample. The unsieved sample was first collected in plastic bags, but continued deep enough that we eventually switched to full soil sample bags. We took at least 15 buckets of material for the sample. The charcoal lens ended up being about 40cm by 100cm with a depth of 40 cm at its largest extents.
